The Humane Society of Weld County announced that it is moving up its Clear the Shelter event to Saturday, Aug. 21 rather than the original date of Aug. 28.

"The Humane Society of Weld County is at capacity and we have a hoarding case incoming of an estimated 20 or more animals," said Sarah Morrill, director of Marketing and Development. "We need to adopt out as many animals as possible to make room for animals that will probably need medical care and recovery time."

The shelter will be offering 50% off adoption fees beginning at noon Saturday and running through Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1620 42nd St., Evans.

You may be thinking, "if the shelter is in dire need of adopting animals out to make room for other animals, why not make adoptions free?"

"We don't look at numbers, we look at individuals," Morrill explained. "Free events can sometimes lead to an increase in impulse adoptions and returns. As a team, we decided we'd rather find way s to deal with overpopulation that risk a chance of an animal having a negative experience."

Some of the things visitors to the shelter this weekend can participate in are open house tours, a donation drive, additional adoptions specials, demonstrations, activities for all ages as well as goodies from Kona Ice and Peak 59 food truck.

On Saturday, the shelter is hosting free behavior training — for dogs, not kids— and on Sunday, anyone interested in volunteering their time to the shelter can get their training out of the way.

As always, the shelter welcomes donations of blankets, dry and wet food for canines and felines, cleaning supplies, toys, dog beds, treats and cash or gift cards to stores like Walmart, Home Depot and Sam's Club.
