Eaton 6, Fort Lupton 1, in Eaton: Eaton opened this season exactly how it closed this past season, with an impressive win against another top-tier team in Class 3A. The Reds (1-0), the defending 3A champion, came into the game ranked first in 3A by CHSAANow.com, while Fort Lupton (1-1) is ranked ninth. The two teams were tied at 1 heading into the bottom of the third before Eaton scored five unanswered runs. Freshman Kiauna Smith hit 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI in her first high school action for the Reds. Five Eaton players each had an RBI. Sophomore Julia Meagher picked up the win in the circle for the Reds, pitching all seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, striking out four and walking one. Fort Lupton's individual statistics weren't available at press time.

Roosevelt 3, Sterling 0, in Johnstown: Roosevelt improved to 4-0 with its third shutout of the young season. Four players each had two hits for the Rough Riders: senior Malaya Coleman, freshman Brook McNeil, senior Emily Davis and sophomore Reagan Scott. Coleman had a triple, a home run and two of Roosevelt's three RBI. She also picked up the win in the pitcher's circle, going the distance, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out 14 and walking three. "Malaya was flat out dealing tonight," Rough Riders coach Vince Moreno wrote in an email. "Malaya was never really in any trouble until the last inning when Sterling did bring the tying run up to the plate, but Malaya ended up striking her out to end the game and to gain her second shutout of the season." Roosevelt entered the week ranked eighth in 4A.

Fossil Ridge 7, Windsor 6, 9 inn., Fort Collins: Windsor opened its season in dramatic fashion, falling just short against the top-ranked defending 5A champion. The Wizards jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom of the third, Fossil Ridge scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Windsor again grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Sabercats didn't relent, tying the game and, ultimately, sending it into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Fossil Ridge scored the winning run three innings later. Junior Olivia Schramm led the way for Windsor offensively, hitting 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run. Senior Anna Marie Salazar had a team-high two RBI on 1-of-4 hitting. The Wizards entered the week unranked in CHSAANow.com's 4A poll.

Elizabeth 13, Northridge 1, in Greeley: After Northridge's season-opening win against Greeley West a week ago, the Grizzlies suffered their first loss, falling to 1-1 with a nonleague loss to a strong Elizabeth squad. Northridge went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals tied the game with a run in the top of the second before blowing open the game with seven runs in the top of the third. Junior Jayah Tellez, sophomore Mikeayla Llamas and sophomore Kennedy Strausheim each had a hit for the Grizzlies. Tellez had Northridge's only RBI.

Frederick 23, Weld Central 1, in 3 inn., in Keenesburg: Weld Central struggled in its season opener against one of the better teams in 4A. After trailing just 2-0 through one inning, the game got away from the Rebels when they gave up 18 runs in the second.

Boys tennis

University 4, Greeley Central 3, at GCHS: In University's first action of the young season, the Bulldogs edged Greeley Central, dropping all three singles matches but sweeping the four doubles matches. Despite the dual loss, the Wildcats were impressive in their singles matches. Junior Ayden Mascarenas dropped his first set but came back to win his No. 3 singles match 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
