Greeley police officers cited a semi driver for reckless driving resulting in serious injury after a U-turn caused a collision that sent two people to the hospital for broken bones.

Just before 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, a Greeley Police Department Public Safety Technician heard a traffic crash occur at H Street and 8th Avenue in Greeley.

As semi driver, 48-year-old Joseph Whalen, was attempting to make a U-turn, a passenger vehicle hit the back of the semi as it turned on 8th Avenue, according to Greeley police.

The collision caused injuries to the 20-year-old driver and the 21-year-old passenger of the vehicle. Both were taken to a local hospital after sustaining multiple broken bones.

The two other occupant's in the vehicle suffered less serious injuries.

Whalen was issued a citation for two counts of careless driving resulting in serious injury, according to police.
