Rodeo action for the 2021 Logan County Fair kicked off Saturday morning with the Jim Mason Memorial Roping. Contestants competed in barrel racing, tie-down roping, ribbon roping and breakaway roping.
For those not familiar, tie-down roping is what was once simply called calf roping; the roper chases a calf, ropes it, jumps from his or her horse, and ties three legs of the calf with a "piggin' string."

John Korrey prepares to throw a loop in the 2021 Jim Mason Memorial Rodeo Saturday. The rodeo was the first of six rodeo events in this year's fair.
Breakaway roping goes much faster. The roper throws a loop over a running calf, then pulls his or her mount up short, and when the calf reaches the end of the rope, it breaks away from the saddle. As soon as the timer sees the flag at the end of the rope, time stops. Ribbon roping is a team affair; the roper pursues and ropes a calf that has a ribbon tied to its tail. The roper's teammate, on foot, races over, yanks the ribbon from the calf's tail, and races to a pre-determined finish line.
Here are the results from Saturday's Mason Memorial Roping:
